Title: Once A Liar
Publisher: HQ Stories
Overall Rating: 3/5
Peter Caine, a cutthroat Manhattan defense attorney, worked ruthlessly to become the best at his job. On the surface, he is charming and handsome, but inside he is cold and heartless. He fights without remorse to acquit murderers, pedophiles and rapists.
When Charlie Doyle, the daughter of the Manhattan DA—and Peter’s former lover—is murdered, Peter’s world is quickly sent into a tailspin. He becomes the prime suspect as the DA, a professional enemy of Peter’s, embarks on a witch hunt to avenge his daughter’s death, stopping at nothing to ensure Peter is found guilty of the murder.
In the challenge of his career and his life, Peter races against the clock to prove his innocence. As the evidence mounts against him, he’s forced to begin unraveling his own dark web of lies and confront the sins of his past. But the truth of who killed Charlie Doyle is more twisted and sinister than anyone could have imagined…
Well this book definitely opened my eyes a little … it had everything from murder, revenge, cold hearted people, subterfuge and so many twists and turns.
The book is all about Peter Caine a defence attorney in Manhattan. A cutthroat, ruthless and unfeeling man that has created himself into a person that feels nothing, not even for his son Jamie or partner Claire.
The book opens with Peter attending his ex-wife’s funeral and automatically he is watching people and gauging their actions and then acting them out himself. Peter is basically a horrid person but has got there due to his upbringing and later work life.
Peters life ends in turmoil when his lover Charlotte turns up dead and he is framed for the murder. It’s then a race against time to prove that he is innocent, but who did kill her?
Ok this was a book that I struggled with and I think it was to do with the main character Peter Caine. I could not for the life of me like him one teeny tiny bit, I mean come on he is a complete sociopath and this is credit to A.F Brady and their creation of him as a character. I think you are meant to hate him and basically feel that he has got his just desserts.
The secondary characters, Jamie (Peters son) Claire (Peter’s girlfriend) and Harrison (District Attorney) all play major parts in this book. From Jamie Who Peter has no relationship with but comes to live with him, to Claire who is Peters long term girlfriend who he has repeatedly cheated on and been indifferent to, to Harrison who helped shape Peter the way he is in terms of his career. They all give you an insight to Peter and how he treats different people in his life.
I mean I was captivated by they book from start to finish. I wanted to know what happened and why Peter was the way he was. It was explained by a back and forth between the now and the past. It looked at Peter before he became who he was. I mean from the start it showed that he was a Liar but still a person that had emotions.
The ending was just WOW so calculating and like Peter despicable. At times this book was slow however the build up of tension and the explanations for why makes the book worth reading.
I enjoyed A.F Brady’s style of writing. It had me captivating and had me HATING the main character which is what I believe the outcome was and for this to happen in the early pages is quite special.
Apart from being slow in parts this thriller whodunnit book was good and had the desired outcome and couldn’t of happened to a nicer person!
